Mountain man's filed Guide grammar

by Gary Spina
""The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar"" is the brainchild of a man who loved to write, but hated learning the rules."

Samuel G. Freedman, the New York Times

A Fearless Adventure in Grammar, Style, and Usage

Conquer new frontiers with this fresh & outrageous take on grammar! The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar - with its fresh, witty, and humorous style - turns the stuffy old grammar book format on its head, delightfully reminding you that grammar can actually be fun.

Whether you are a writer, professional, student, or just an adventurous soul, The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar is the perfect trail guide to lead you safely through the tangles and gorges of the grammar wilderness.

Seasoned throughout with colorful stories, clever anecdotes, and offbeat words of wisdom, The Mountain Man's Field Guide to Grammar relives the rollicking, riotous days of the old West and the long-lost lore of the mountain man.

Mount up, and keep a sharp eye. Keep your steel keen and your powder dry. Where we go, few follow.

"In writing this book, I have attempted to make each line of text, each rule of grammar, and each example fresh and new and original. But a noun is a noun and a verbal is a verbal, and festooning them in gaudy finery can neither add nor detract from their essence. American grammar and construction--the essential stuff--is staid and stately, elegant, sensuous, raw, and beautiful."

very powerful podcast Just vocabulary Podcast

Just Vocabulary Podcast is an English vocabulary audio podcast that introduces words from the GRE, SAT and TOEFL lists. The podcast has been going strong since 2005, which is more than most podcasts can claim!
Just Vocabulary introduces two words per episode and explains them in detail including antonyms, synonyms and example sentences. There are literally hundreds of episodes to choose from, providing listeners with hours and hours of content and hundreds of vocabulary terms. It's really quite impressive.
Of course, it's free to subscribe and there is also a newsletter, study quizzes/games and a map of where listeners tune in from. Also available for a nominal price are very useful study guides for iPod.
These audio lessons aren't just for people learning English! With words like quixotic, immure, abstemious and surreptitious, these lessons are incredibly useful for native English speakers preparing for SATs, GREs, college level English courses or just interested in expanding their vocabulary.

Powerful and mass of way to learn American English VOA

Learning English is VOA’s multimedia source of news and information for millions of English learners worldwide.  audio programs and captioned videos are written using vocabulary at the intermediate and upper-beginner level. programs are read one-third slower than normal English speed. Online texts, MP3s and podcasts let people read, listen and learn American English and much more.
Learning English began as Special English, which Voice of America launched in 1959. Special English newscasts and features were a primary fixture of VOA’s international shortwave broadcasts for more than half a century. In 2014,  line of products was expanded to include more English teaching materials, and the service became known as Learning English.
Some language teaching methods are dull and disconnected from real life. People soon forget what they learn, or focus on words and phrases without context. VOA Learning English maintains a loyal following among learners, teachers and educational publishers worldwide by using journalism to engage people's interests. Learners absorb American English through content drawn from world news, business, science, U.S. life, popular culture and other topics. People build their vocabulary, strengthen their speaking skills and improve their ability to communicate for work, school and everyday life.
Learning English texts, MP3s and videos are in the public domain. You are allowed to reprint them for educational and commercial purposes, with credit to learningenglish.voanews.com. VOA photos are also in the public domain. However, photos and video images from news agencies such as AP and Reuters are copyrighted, so you are not allowed to republish them.
High-resolution audio and video files can be downloaded for free through BBG Direct an online service providing original multimedia content from Voice of America.

The Bob and Rob show podcast

The Bob and Rob Show is a short podcast that is aimed at people who are trying to learn English. While they say their material is suitable for all levels, I think that beginners (and maybe even intermediates) would have a hard time learning anything constructive here. First of all, when they are bantering with each other, both Bob and Rob speak rather quickly. This probably makes it difficult for a beginner to follow the gist of the conversation. Second, they tend to use a lot of idiomatic phrases that beginning language learners would not understand.

When they start talking about the grammatical topic of the week, things get much better. They explain the grammar rules pretty well and they give good examples.

Overall, I think this podcast could be useful for higher intermediate and advanced students.

(By the way, I wish they would lose that cheesy laugh track!)
